FA Vase R3, 1-0 win over Seaham RS.

FA Vase R3
9th January 2016
Dunston UTS 1
Seaham Red Star 0
Played at Consett AFC.

Dunston were on their travels again this time at a rearranged home fixture venue as the Dunston pitch was unplayable due to the excessive rainfall over the last month. The rearranged fixture was to be played at the Belle View Stadium, Consett on fellow Northern League side Consett FC 3G all weather pitch. Even that did not mean that the game would be played as a heavy mist enshrouded the area reducing visibility to about 60 yards, however with both sides eager to play and there being no danger to the players the referee had decided to start the game. Both sides had to make changes to their normal selections due to cup-tied players and suspensions, but both were able to field competitive teams.
.
Dunston thoroughly deserved this victory and should have been 2 or 3 goals up at half time but for their off target shooting when chances occurred. In the second half Dunston continued to boss the game except for the odd occasion when Seaham mustered an attack but the Dunston defence in the main controlled the situation. Dunston were still missing the shooting boots as the game progressed into added on time when Dan Halliday played in a cross to the near post and Dunston top scorer Malky Morien met it with a glancing header which hit the back of the net with 90 seconds of play to go. Seaham rallied and forced a corner and in the last seconds of the game Dunston were able to withstand the barrage to complete a hard earned victory and a 4th round tie next week against Coleshill Town FC (near Coventry) again on a newly laid 3G pitch.

In the 4th minute Seaham gained the first corner of the game which Dunston partially cleared before a ball was played back in which Connell dealt with. Dunston were playing a good game in midfield and progressing to push the eagerness of the Seaham players back and on 10 minutes Francis had three shots all blocked by the Seaham defence before one got through forcing the keeper to push the ball onto the post and fortunately back into his welcome arms. On 12, former Whitley bar player Lee Kerr played in a 20 yard free kick which was deflected for a corner, which resulted in a series of 3 corners being dealt with by the Dunston defence.
.
On 14 Dan Smith ran with the ball at the Seaham defence and was fouled 20 yards out and a Francis free kick went just wide of the near post, two minutes later Thear played in a cross and Smith headed wide of the target. On 22, Kerr again played in a free kick which was collected by Connell. After 26 Harrison got involved in the Dunston attack and drove in a low cross to the far post which beat all attempts to make contact, followed on 28 by a Morien low cross/ shot which went wide of the back post. On another rare attack Noble shot high and wide of the Dunston goal on 30 minutes before Smith shot on 33 minutes came back to him and his cross to the back post was, met by Thear who headed over the bar.

On 35 Burrell drove in a shot which was deflected for a corner, the corner kick to the back post was met by Francis who played a header back across goal which was cleared. On 39 Smith again caused problems for the Seaham defence as his shot was deflected for a corner. On 41 minutes Morien dribbled into the box and shot just wide of the near post. On 44, a Francis free kick was played into the area and had to be cleared for a corner and a minute later it looked like Dunston would score as Richardson broke down the right and played into Morien in front of goal only for Morien to be ruled offside.

Rejuvenated and refreshed by the break the second half started in a battle again for midfield supremacy and it was only after 57 minutes that Burrell created a chance for Morien who shot wide, Seaham replied from a corner by substitute Bolam which fell to Noble who shot wide. On 60, Francis drove at the Seaham defence and shot from 25 yards which keeper Newbrook did well to deflect wide from the corner Morien Flicked in a header which was stopped by Newbrook. On 65 Thear had a shot which went wide of the far post, before 3 minutes later a Francis free kick played into the far post was too good and went past the far post. On 70 minutes a ball was played into Morien who in turn laid off to Richardson who shot wide of the mark. Seaham again replied and Gardiner played in a low shot which Connell collected.

.
On 74 Harrison played a low cross which was met by Morien whose shot on target was cleared, this was followed by a Thear cross which was headed goalwards by Richardson but was deflected wide by Walker for a corner. On 80 minutes Thear attacked from the left wing, beat his marker and shot from 20 yards over the bar. In a spell of Dunston pressure Morien had a25 yard shot stopped, followed by another which went wide and then Guerin and Burrell played in shots which all went wide, in a brief respite Noble attempted a flicked header which Connell collected.
.
As the game entered 2 minutes added on time Smith headed the ball to Morien on the edge of the box and he shot wide of the mark before Halliday attacked down the left wing and played in a cross which was met by Morien at the front post, Morien’s flicked header gave Newbrook no chance and the net bulged giving Dunston a deserved lead. Seaham tried to rally and won a free kick which was played into the Dunston area and cleared for a corner, from the corner the ball fell to Newbrook into a packed Dunston area and his shot was blocked and as the ball was cleared the referee whistled for the end of the game.

Dunston’s Man of the Match: Dan Smith – Dan showed his mental and physical resolve in this game pushing and probing in attack and rallying and chasing back in midfield. His positive attitude on the all-weather pitch gave his side a big advantage against a hard working side and was also unlucky not to score in a game were shooting on target was a missing factor. Defensively Dunston were sound with Stephen Harrison in particular putting in a sound performance. This was a good team performance apart from scoring goals after the winter break.
