Dismal Weather Dismal Result..

EBAC Northern League Division 1
Celtic Nation1
Dunston UTS 0

Dunston travelled to Cumbria on a cold rainy night to play Celtic Nation in the EBAC Northern League. After 17 games Celtic have collected 13 points and are currently in seventeenth place after their successful side of last season has virtually disappeared following the surprise resignation of their owner and sponsor.

Dunston are in third place and only 3 points behind West Auckland who have 36 points but with two games in hand. Tonight Dunston are again struggling to name an established side because of work commitments and injuries although tongs are in the fire for new signings to add to the squad.

Dunston started well and had a lot of possession, but the final ball was found to be lacking penetration to trouble the Celtic keeper. On 4 Bulford headed over a Williams cross, Ormston shot over the bar from 18 yards after a good build up on 8, 2 minutes later a Harrison free kick was cleared at the back post. On 12 Earl had a shot which Clark took low down. Williams tried a 40 yard shot which went just over the bar on 15, before Bulford harried a defender won the ball but his shot curved away past the far post.

Nation retaliated on 17 as Armstrong got a shot in off an Allen cross at the far post which Clark saved. On 25, a Halliday free kick into the far post was pushed away by Casson. 5 minutes later Allen had a shot blocked by Harrison and from the resulting corner Allen rose unchallenged at the front post to deflect the ball into the Dunston net 1-0 Celtic Nation on 31 minutes. Dunston had another chance on 35 as Harrison crossed but Ormston could not get a head on it.

Half time score: 1 - 0

Dunston came out firing in the second half but once again moves broke down too easily with sloppy control, on 47 a Halliday cross was met by the head of Fenwick but went over the bar. Nation nearly went two up as Earl shot and the ball was inadvertently deflected by the referee, causing Clark to change direction to save at the front post. On 55 a Halliday corner had to punched away to safety by Casson . On 63 Kelvin got to corner kick and headed onto the bar and clear. A minute later Allen crossed and Armstrong headed goalwards and Clark had to make a save, from the next corner Clark blocked another header on the line and the ball was cleared. On 66 Dan Halliday put in a corner to the back post and Bulford forced a save from Casson, within a minute a Halliday free kick into the back post where Dixon could just not bundle the ball into the net, another minute and a Harrison cross was headed clear of danger by Brown.

Dunston were now in the ascendency but as the rain got stronger so did Celtics defence, on 76 Wilson had 2 shots blocked and the Dixon fired over the bar from 20 yards. A minute later Halliday had a goal bound shot blocked, Dunston were trying but mistakes were occurring and chances being missed, on 82, Douglas broke and shot over the bar, before Wilson sent a header goalwards only to be deflected wide. In the final minutes Clark sent in long free kick from the half way line and Dixons header was saved.

In added on time for stoppages and time wasting Bulford had a header from a Harrison cross go just over the bar.

Full time score: Celtic Nation 1 Dunston 0

A game of missed opportunities and Dunston being punished again for a defensive error in allowing Allen space and opportunity to glance a header into the net. Dunston tried in the second half but did not have the ability to force an equaliser never mind a winner, meanwhile goal keeper Andy Clark pulled off some good saves at the other end, especially a deflected shot off the referee which had him going the wrong way.

Dunston Man of the Match: Andy Clark pulled off some good saves keeping his side in with a chance to get back into the game. Gareth Williams also did well in a packed midfield on a sticky pitch. Dan Wilson also did well after coming on as substitute for the tiring Scott Fenwick.
