EBAC Northern League Division 1
Dunston UTS. 3 Penrith 2
.
Dunston entertained Penrith in the Northern League fixture at the Dunston UTS Stadium. The Dunston side was decimated and only the late return of former stalwart Ben Cattanach enabled Billy Irwin to collect a make shift side for the visit of the Cumbrians who are currently just below half way in the league after a difficult start to the season.
.
Dunston started brightly and got an early lead as Scott Fenwick laid a square ball off to Nicky Kane in front of goal on 4 minutes, Kane made no mistake and shot home from 10 yards. Dunston were looking good going forwards with their make shift side as several layers were being asked to play in different midfield roles. Despite making chances Dunston were unable to get a second goal as Penrith grew in confidence and on 26 minutes their misery was compounded as Hope flicked a shot, from a hopeful long throw into the Dunston area, past a stagnant Dunston defence for an equaliser. The game continued with both sides having limited chances up to half time.
.
Half time score: 1-1
.
After a scrappy affair at the start of the second half Dunston looked the more likely to score but oppertunities were scarce until the 65 minute when Scott Fenwick was bundled down in the penalty area by Tidy, Fenwick recovered to shoot the penalty kick home sending goal keeper Richardson the wrong way, 2-1 to Dunston. Once again the game settled with both sides creating few goal scoring opportunities troubling the keepers until the last few minutes of the game. Penrith won a corner which was taken by Hall, his cross found substitute Pickthall at the front post and his deflected header went past a stranded Dunston defence for a second equaliser.
.
With the game entering added on time a long clearance from the Penrith defence saw Connell leave his area to prevent another Penrith attack he controlled the ball and unleashed a 60 yard diagonal pass to Fenwick on the edge of the Penrith area , Scott Fenwick controlled the ball into his run, before chipping the ball over Richardson and into the net for 3-2 to Dunston. Within a minute the referee blew for full time and a victory to Dunston.
.
Full time score: Dunston 3 Penrith 2
.
A cobbled together side produced a performance which was good enough to beat Penrith but all this seemed to have been in vain as Penrith scored an equaliser on 90 minutes, however a tremendous goal assisting pass, from Connell, worthy of winning any game and a piece of great control and striking ability gave Dunston a hard earned victory in added on time.
.
Dunston Man of the Match: Nicky Kane, his hard work and effort in the central midfield position was key in today's performance. The goal assist from Connell and Scott Fenwick's scoring ability also deserve mentions alongside the wily performance from Ben Cattanach.
