FA Vase Round 2
22nd November 2014
Dunston UTS 1 (Bulford, Coulson)
Guisborough Town 1 (Earl)
Att 198

Dunston entertain Guisborough Town of the EBAC Northern League Cup at Dunston UTS Stadium for the second time in a week in the FA Vase. Last week, in a competitive, challenging game, Guisborough took the honours winning 4 – 3.This week after another defeat in the league to North Shields, Dunston welcome back Liam Connell and Dan Halliday after their respective injuries to bolster the squad. Guisborough had the same starting line-up as the previous week.

Dunston took up the challenge and were immediately showing their presence in the Guisborough area, on 5 minutes Liversedge cut out a Burrell cross, then a minute later Wightman attacked the Guisborough defence and unleashed a 20 yard shot which Liversedge saved. From a Harrison free kick on 7 minutes was cleared by McPhillips for a corner, from the corner taken by Harrison, Coulson was just unable to direct his header on target. On 12, Ormston had a 25 yard shot collected by Liversedge as Dunston pressed for the opening goal.

On 20 minutes, Guisborough made their first break away, Bythway lofted a ball into the centre of the Dunston area and a Stevens header deflected the ball onto the in running Earl who volleyed a shot firmly past Connell, 1- 0 to Guisborough.
Dunston replied with a shot from Burrell which was off target on 21, then Bulford beat the offside trap a minute later, his shot from 25 yards went wide of the far post. A minute further on and after some good approach play Ormston laid the ball back to Harrison whose shot went over the bar. On 23 Dixon chased a through ball only to be thwarted by the out coming keeper who parried the ball to safety before it was cleared. On 24, a save from Burrell saw ball put out for a corner as Wightman rushed in.

After 28, a Halliday cross was met by Ormston who headed back across goal for Bulford whose shot was blocked and went for a corner, from the corner Dixon swept a shot just wide of the target. Another Guisborough break on 29 saw Stevens try a flick shot at the front post, but Connell was alert and collected it. On 32 Burrell put in a low cross which only needed a touch but it went right through and past the far post for a goal kick. On 36 from Guisborough’s third chance of the half Stevens forced Connell to save. On 38 another Burrell cross was cut out for a corner, before Halliday tried a volley from 35 yards which went over the cross bar. Despite Dunston’s advance play they still went in at half time a goal down despite restricting Guisborough to only three attempts

Half time score: 0 – 1

Dunstons rousing half time talk ensured their attacking game was straight back in play and on 50 minutes, Dixon rose to put a header over Liversedge and onto the cross bar. On 55 Risborough played a ball into the channel for Earl’s run, he approached the advancing Connell and chipped a ball over Connell, just wide of the near post. From the goal kick, Connell played the ball to Ormston, who played a Diagonal ball into Bulfords’ run into the goal area; Bulford rounded his marker and shot home for the equaliser on 56 minutes. Dunston continued to press and from a Low Harrison corner into the box Coulson was left with a prodded tap home shot for 2 -1 to Dunston. On 58 Bulford was denied only by the fingertips of Liversedge from a header to a Wightman cross.

On 67 Dixon won a challenge, in the corner and played a ball in to Bulford, Bulford’s low cross across goal was just behind the incoming Wightman at the far post. Two minutes later Ormston played In Bulford whose shot was saved. On 75 Bulford beat the defence, and his cross field pass to Ormston was returned to him at the back post but his volleyed shot was just wide.

Disaster struck Dunston on 82 as the referee awarded a penalty for a player who just appeared to fall as he turned in the area, Mulligan took the penalty and Connell somehow managed to reverse his move and push the kick wide of the target, disaster averted.

Dunston regained their composure and on 86, Coulson glanced a header wide from a Harrison free kick. Guisborough pushed forward in an attempt to save the game but Dunston held firm as on 89 Coulson had to clear for a corner. From the corner Earl shot wide. Dunston then endured a 7 minute period of added time, mainly for the injury to Stevens, and held onto their lead and completed a good victory from a good performance.

Full time score: Dunston 2 Guisborough Town 1

In summary, Dunston put Guisborough on the back foot from the start restricting their attacks in the first half to 3, despite this they went behind to Earl’s strike on 20 minutes. In the second half Dunston continued to attack and got their reward in a two goal strike from Bulford and Coulson. Guisborough had the opportunity to equalise on 82 but Connell saved Mulligans’ penalty kick to ensure that his teams’ efforts brought the reward they deserve.

Dunston Man of the Match: Michael Dixon; his initial midfield play, followed by his attacking positional play up front after 20 minutes showed a great example for his side. Mention also for Connells penalty save after a reasonably quiet afternoon.
