Northern League Cup R2Dunston UTS 2
Sunderland RCA 0
Att 119
Dunston entertained Sunderland
RCA in the EBAC Northern League Cup at Dunston UTS Stadium. The tie sees Dunston currently second top in
the league play against second bottom, although RCA do have games in hand on
the teams around them.
Today Billy Irwin is without the services again of
Hodgson, Burrell (both knee injuries), Connell (suspended) and McAndrew (hernia
op), but has recently signed a player Republic of Ireland Dan O’Reilly, now
residing in the Dunston area. Tonight
side is the team that started the game against Morpeth.
Dunston were first to show on
4 minutes as Ormston put a low cross into the area which ex Dunston goalkeeper
Carmichael collected safely. RCA replied a minute later as Davis also put in a
low cross which Gilhespy did well to clear. On 10 Harrison had a shot well
taken by Carmichael, then 2 minutes later a low cross from Wilson found Dixon
only 10 yards out but his shot went over the bar. On 15 Austin-Wilson won a
corner which was taken by Brown but was too strong and cleared the goal area. A
minute later Harrison again had a shot saved by Carmichael.
On 21 Wray got in a
header from a Richardson free kick which was saved low down by Clark. 4 minutes
later Wilson had a diving header attempt at the front post from an Ormston
cross. On 30 Nicky Kane turned on a ball from Dixon and his diagonal shot went
across goal and past he far post. On 32 Dan Halliday was fouled by Davis and
could not resume because of a leg injury and was replaced by Cattanach. On 37, Wightman was played in by Dixon; he put his shot
just wide of the near post. Overall, the first half was not awe inspiring as
both sides built up moves but failed to cash in on the final stage, with both
the goalkeepers hardly being tested.
Half time score: 0 – 0
In the second half it was RCA
who started better and did put The Dunston goal under pressure, on 48 a Brown
corner was headed by Barton and Clark did well to tip over the bar, from that
corner Austin Wilson headed across the goal and just wide of the far post.
Dunston were building up passing moves and on 55 Ormston shot over the bar, on
56 Wightman forced a corner from a good pass from Wilson. RCA replied when
Callen fed Austin-Wilson whose shot across goal went one foot past the far
post. On 65, a Richardson free kick from the corner flag was met by a looping
header from Barton over Clark and onto the cross bar. 3 minutes later a
Wightman long throw was headed to safety for a corner, Harrisons over hit
corner kick was too strong and went safe out of play. On 69, Davis turned on a
ball in the area and shot over the bar from 18 yards.
On 72, Clark did well to
punch clear a corner kick; unfortunately it fell to Bythway who sent a volley
back on target an Ormston had to clear off the line. Dunston broke away down
the field and Bulford did well to chase
down a Wilson forward pass, his pull back found Ormston who shot home from 6
yards 1- 0 to Dunston after 74 minutes. RCA came straight back and Barton shot on 75 had Clark scrambling after
a spinning ball, But Clark managed to collect as Austin- Wilson challenged. On
81 a Wilson cross was met by Ormston whose shot hit the goalkeeper, Wilson then
fired another shot which resulted in a rebounded ball but although Ormston
challenged on the ground he won the ball but was unable to direct his shot.
Dunston tried to control play against a fighting RCA side, however on 90
minutes it was Dunston who again scored as Bulford latched onto a Wilson
diagonal ball and fired it past the advancing Carmichael 2- 0 to Dunston and game over.
Full time score: Dunston UTS
2 Sunderland RCA 0
A rather lack lustre game with
both sides scrapping it out in midfield but not really creating scoring
opportunities, RCA went closest to scoring at the beginning of the second half
but this seemed to wake Dunston up and as a result the winning goals came from
Ormston and Bulford. This was a good result for Dunston from an overall average
team performance.
Dunston Man of the Match: Gary
Ormston, whose goal line clearance and then 2 minutes later goal at the
opposite end set up the Dunston victory, Mentions also for Andy Clark and the
defensive pairing of Gilhespy and Coulson who were kept busy by the fizzing
Austin- Wilson and wily Barton of RCA.
