Dunston UTS 3 Guisborough 4

Advantage Guisborough in FA Vase warm up...

15th November 2014
Northern League Division 1
Dunston UTS 3
Guisborough Town 4

Dunston entertained Guisborough Town in the EBAC Northern League Cup at Dunston UTS Stadium. The game is a warm up for next week’s FA Vase tie, but also has 2nd top Dunston playing against seventh top league side, so an enterprising fixture can be expected. Today Billy Irwin welcomes back to the side Dale Burrell, but is is without the services of both the fullbacks Dan Halliday (leg injury) and Stephen Harrison (unavailable) so has to reorganise his defensive line up and midfield from the previous victory.

Guisborough started strong and their first cross on 2 minutes was dealt with by Clark, Dunston retaliated with Burrell getting the ball into the Guisborough area but the final ball failed to reach O’Reilly. On 7, Wightman had a shot blocked by Liversedge and cleared. 5 minutes later Ormston crossed to the back post and Burrell pull back ball into the goal area was blocked and cleared for a corner, from the corner Ormston had a shot blocked after Dixon laid ball back.

Guisborough came back and Bythway had a shot which rebounded to Risborough who shot over the bar. On 17 Earl miskicked a shot which was blocked and fell to Gell whose shot was deflected past Clark and into the net. Guisborough 1 – 0 up. Dunston rallied and on 20, Burrell on the right flank side shot diagonally across the goal and to safety.

On 28 a Cattanach cross was taken well in the air by Liversedge before a long throw from Wightman into the area was met by Coulson who headed past Liversedge for the equaliser on 29 minutes. The game flowed between the sides, before Wightman on 36 crossed and a Burrell header from the back post was collected by Liversedge, 3 minutes later Martin played in a low cross to Earl at the Dunston back post and only a strong Gilhespy sliding challenge blocked the goal bound shot.

Dunston were rallied again as Wilson won a challenge against the Guisborough defence and got in a shot only for Liversedge to save. On 43 Wightman played a good ball down the channel for O’Reilly who did well to force a corner.

Half time score: 1 - 1

On 50 minutes Dunston got the first chance as Wilson played in a cross but O’ Reilly was unable to connect and it was cleared, two minutes later Cattanach played a through ball an O’Reilly shot was blocked and rebounded to Burrell who shot wide of the far post. On 54 a mistimed challenge allowed Martin to cross into the Dunston area where the unfortunate Cattanach under challenge from Stevens looped a header over Clark for Guisborough’s second goal. On 57 Earl collected a ball in the area turned and shot just wide before Risborough advanced into the area but Clark blocked his path for a corner. From the corner on 59, McPhillips met the crossed ball with a firm header into the net as Clark attempted to punch clear. 1 -3 to Guisborough.

Dunston immediately retaliated as Burrell collected a ball in the centre of the pitch 25 yards out and struck a low shot into the bottom corner of the Guisborough net 2 – 3 to Guisborough after 60 minutes. Guisborough rallied as Dunston pushed on for the equaliser when Earl won a challenge against Williams on the outside of the box, his shot was hammered low past Clark into the Dunston net for 2 - 4 to Guisborough on 66 minutes. With play opening up as Dunston pushed on Earl blasted a shot over the bar on 70 minutes, on 80 , Ormston had a header at the back post cleared by a defender before substitute Hume, ex Dunston, had a shot blocked.

On 82, Wilson collected a ball in the box and was tripped as he tried to turn, Bulford slammed the penalty kick home for 3 – 4 to Guisborough, the revival was back on. On 83 Kane crossed an Dixon’s header was taken by Liversedge, the pressure continued with Guisborough defending gallantly, on 88, a Burrell cross to the back post was just too high for Coulson. Despite the pressure and a series of corners Dunston had to admit to defeat as the final whistle came.

Full time score: Dunston UTS 3 Guisborough Town 4

In summary, once again the Dunston team suffered the misfortune of a mis-kicked shot falling to another attacker who then put in a deflected shot into the net, however they seemed to recover and got the equaliser going in level at half time. After the break another Guisborough goal came from a missed tackle and an own goal resulting from an incoming cross. A third Guisborough goal from a poorly defended corner resulted in instant Dunston revival with a goal from a good Burrell shot, however a fourth Guisborough goal as Dunston pushed on was just too much to ask for, and Dunston only got one more consolation goal from a Bulford penalty kick despite putting the Guisborough goal area under pressure. It was a hard working performance with little reward.

Dunston Man of the Match: Dale Burrell, after a lay-off with a troublesome injury he came back with energy and passion giving support to all over the pitch.
