Dunston Fail To Crack FA Vase Holders...

10th October 2015
North Shields 2

Dunston UTS 1
Ebac Northern League Division 1

Dunston on their travels again, this time down the River Tyne to North Sheilds to face
the current FA Vase holders, who despite a slow start to the season are currently on a five match winning run which has Seen them move into 6th place in the league just ahead of Dunston who have a game in hand and trail by 2 points.
.
Dunston are in a rebuilding process after Andrew Bulford left to join South Sheilds, Michael Dixon to join Ashington and Matty Briggs has went to University down South, in coming are Dale Pearson signed from West Allotment and Kia Hewitson from Tow Law. Manager Billy Irwin is hoping for a good performance after the last game at Marske were they drew 1-1 but deserved a win.
.
Sheilds had Gareth Bainbridge in their side after a period out through injury , Dan Wilson an early season transfer , and Gary Ormston a close season signing both from Dunston.
.
North Shields started brightly and won a corner on 2 minutes, which was cleared, however on four minutes, as Dunston tried to clear their box, the ball fell to Ormston who laid
off to McKeown who struck a shot from 25 yards into Connell's top right corner 1-0 to Sheilds.

Dunston rallied and on 5 Michael Pearson put in a cross, which was cleared as far a Francis whose 20 yard shot was blocked. On 10, Thear tried an overhead kick, which was blocked, the ball fell to Halliday who shot wide of the post.

.
A minute later, a Haliday free kick was headed on target by Wilkinson and collected by McCaffety. On 14, Burrell crossed an McCaffety again collected. On 18 Wilkinson was cautioned for a foul 25 yards out, the free kick by Bainbridge curled around the wall and past a stationary Connell into the top right corner of the goal, 2-0 to Shields.
.
Dunston were controlling the play but were determined to get back into the game. On 21, Thear won a ball on the right wing side of the box by the by-line, his low cross into the area was met by Richardson who forced the ball home 2-1 to Shields.
.
Wilson for Shields  attacked the Dunston defence on 25, but Gilhespy recovered to mop up the pass into the area and cleared, before Bainbridge corner was met but a soft header went wide of the target.
.
On 31, Ormston had a shot pushed away by Connell, diving low to his right. On 39 Wilson beat Michael Pearson and crossed but the Dunston defence cleared. Just before the half time whistle Michael Pearson had a shot from 20 yards which went just over the bar, leaving the half time score at 2-1 to North Shields.

Sheilds came out on top at the start of the second half and on 48 Wilson shot wide of the far post from 20 yards, on 50 Bainbridge was played in behind the Dunston defence, but he shot wide of the advancing Connell and the net, on 53 Burrell Fired in from a free kick which McCafferty saved. A minute later Bainbridge shot from 20 yard out past he near left hand post. On 65, Dale Pearson had a shot deflected over the Shields goal, before Bainbridge again was played in behind th Dunston defence, with only Connell to beat, Connell forced him wide and out of play and the chance was lost.
.
A major turning point of the game occurred a minute later as Dan Smith was dismissed from the field for a second caution able offence, a soft sideways trip on Holmes as he was chasing back. On 69, McKeown shot wide as Dunston tried to push on, on 73, Ormston shot past an advancing Connell only for a Dunston defender to block on the line from where the ball was cleared. Dunston were pushing for an equaliser on 83 as Michael Pearson played a ball into the front post, but just too high for Richardson, with a stretched Dunston defence McCorrigan broke clear with Connell to beat, he was forced wide but his cross was met by Wilson whose shot was blocked on 85.
.
This proved to be the last chance of the game as Shields finished winners by 2 goals to 1.This was a funny but competitive game between 2 matched sides, Dunston were struck by two good goals, from Shields point of view in 18 minutes as they were settling in and pushing for a goal themselves. Dunston rallied and got a goal back on 21 minutes, but despite probing and pushing were unable to get an equaliser. Just after half time Shields should have increased their lead but were unable to actually score.
.
The referee, in my opinion was very harsh on the Dunston side and on 68 minutes
was even harsher as he sent off Dan Smith for a sideways trip while chasing back, Dunston tried but could not recover and get an equaliser and while they pushed on Shields should have scored in their break always.
.
All in all Dunston seemed to lack shape and ability to force McCafferty to make saves, despite having a more than fair share of possession.
.
Dunston Man of the Match: Dale Burrell, In a game which cried out for a match winner, no body really stood out, Dale was tireless in midfield and tried to build up moves in
midfield, ably assisted by Dan Smith until he got sent off.
.
North Shields: McCaffety, Donnison, Summerly ( Grey 89), McKeown, Parker, Coppen, Richardson,
