Dunston overpower Bay to proceed in Vase..

21st November 2015
FA Vase Round 2
Whitley Bay 1

Dunston UTS 2 (Morien 2)
.
Dunston were on their travels again in their first game of the FA Vase this season to play fellow Vase Winners and Northern League side Whitley Bay on a freezing cold day.
.
The Hillheads pitch had passed an inspection and looked good from the side lines after the rain, snow and driving winds in the last week. Dunston had selection issues with Connell injured, Wilkinson suspended, Bowes, Fisher and Shaw all cup-tied but welcomed the return of Harrison and Goddard to the squad. Whitley were glad to be starting a game after their recent postponement against Newcastle Benfield, while Dunston travelled to fellow league top side Guisborough which produced a hard earned draw despite a reoccurring injury to goalkeeper Liam Connell after 10 minutes.
 .
Dunston nearly took an early lead on 16 sec as Morien took advantage of a loose defensive clearance by Bramley and released a dipping volley which just went over the bar. Dunston were pushing Bay back and on 9, Richardson put in a low cross which Anderson deflected for a corner, from the corner Martindale got up well and his header was deflected over the bar by Jennison. A minute later and Gilesphy did well to mop up a Whitley breakaway and protect the Dunston area.
.
On 17, Smith was cautioned for a poor diving in challenge at the halfway line. After 21, Morien tried a free kick from 22 yards out which beat the wall and Jennison had to save, this was followed by a Richardson attack down the left wing which saw his shot deflected by Laws past the far post. Whitley replied with a Kempster cross that Clark collected to relieve the pressure. Dunston replied on 25 with a Richardson volley under a challenge from 18 yards out which went just wide of the near post.
.
Kempster replied for Bay with a turning shot from 10 yards out which went over the bar. Dunston applied pressure but needed a goal to press home their performance and on 34 Dale Burrell had 3 attempts within a minute thwarted by a harried Bay defence as first a header was partially cleared off the line by Kempster, then as the ball fell loose a poked shot from 6 yards hit the post and bounced out and then a shot from 15 yards was well saved by Jennison pushing it around the post.
.
Whitley striving to get in the game had a chance on 37 as Laws header from a Kempster free kick was saved by Clark. Dunston trying to open their account had a Francis effort from 10 yards out deflected for a corner on 38, 4 minutes later Thear had a shot saved by Jennison from 18 yards and just on half time a Morien header off a Francis corner was saved by Jennison.
.

Half Time Score Whitley Bay 0 Dunston 0
 .
Whitley Bay came out strong in the second half and on 46 only a good tackle by Francis on Hughes stopped a shot on target, however it was Dunston on 47 who opened their account as Richardson broke through and his pass across to Morien allowed him to slot home passed an advancing Jennison for a deserved 1-0 to Dunston. Dunston almost doubled their tally on 50 as Morien hammered home a shot past Jennison only to be ruled offside, again on 53 Morien got an easy chance to score but his effort flew over the bar.

.
Morien turned provider, as he laid a ball off to Richardson whose shot was saved. Dunston got their surprise second goal on 68, as Jennison who had had a good game, came out of his area to clear the ball, however the ball hit a soft patch and went under his foot allowing Morien to proceed onwards to goal and score his and Dunston’s second. On 69 Smith played a header back across the Whitley goal but the Dunston attackers were unable to connect, and a minute later Thear got into the box rounded the keeper but a timely tackle back by Gibson stopped a certain goal.
.
Again on 71, Dunston were unable to take advantage of a spilled ball from the keeper from a low cross and the ball was cleared. On 75 Whitley got their goal which was a screaming shot by un marked Bertram from 18 yards out giving Clark no chance. Goddard on as substitute for a battered Richardson got an immediate chance of glory but was beaten by a last gasp challenge which ensured the chance was lost.

.
Dunston were in control of the game although Whitley were fighting hard and on 84 almost scored again as Francis was played into position by a sideways free kick from Burrell but his shot from 25 yards went just over the bar. Dunston controlled the game reducing Whitley to a last minute volleyed shot by Norris which went wide of the target.
.
Final Score: Whitley Bay 1 Dunston UTS 2
.
Dunston thoroughly deserved this victory and could, and should have been 2 or 3 goals up at half time, but after Whitley came at them strong from the second half kick-off it was Dunston who broke and scored through Morien after a pass from Richardson, Dunston however needed a second and it came from a previously confident Jennison error as lack of bounce off the pitch combined to allow the Morien in to walk the ball home.
.
Whitley rallied and got, what proved to be a consolation goal from a Bertram screamer which gave Clark no chance, however Dunston then were composed and able to play out the remainder of the game without conceding and could have in fact increased their lead.
.
Dunston’s Man of the Match: Dale Burrell - back to his best and as captain lead his side by example to a deserved victory, on blemish was a caution for a couple of silly fouls and questioning the referees decisions
.
Whitley Bay: Jennison, Gibson, McDonald, Anderson, Laws (Norris 79), Bramley, Hughes, Bertram, Shanks (Williamson 72), Bell, Kempster. Subs not used: Gladstone, Richardson, Day.
.
Dunston UTS: Clark, Pearson, Halliday, Burrell, Martindale, Gilhespy, Smith, Francis, Richardson (Goddard 78). Morien, Thear. Subs not used: Harrison, Connell, Tucker.
