Durham City 0
Attendance 207
.
Dunston were back home and the pitch is playable after the last 2 months of rain, to play Durham City in a hastily rearranged date after Morpeth Town, their listed opponents were due to play North Shields in the 4th Round of the FA Vase. Dunston were without the injured Liam Thear (shin injury) and Scott Martindale (suspension), with manager Billy Irwin away watching next week’s opponents Ashford United in Kent, his assistant manager Tony Harrison fielded a side which saw Dale Burrell and Alex Francis rested but taking their places on the bench. Durham who have lost their home pitch and now play out of Consett on the 3G pitch, fielded a side including David Coulson who played for Dunston last season.

Dunston started well on the sticky but superb looking surfaces and in the 2nd minute Morien took a free kick 20 yards out which Flynn tipped onto the cross bar and across the goal where Richardson got his head to the ball but the ball went wide, a minute later Gary Shaw played in a low cross which defied all and went harmlessly across the penalty box. On 8, Bowey received a lay off from Morien and shot over the bar from 25 yards. Durham gradually worked their way into the game and on 10 Nicholas Allen beat the Dunston defence but shot over the bar from 20 yards, and again 4 minutes later Saunders got through to shoot into the side netting. On 16 a Fisher corner forced Flynn to clear his line with a punch. On 23 Bowey again tried his luck from 35 yards after a short free kick but saw his shot go over the bar. On 32, Bakhti drove a low ball into the goal area; Connell parried the ball allowing Fisher to clear the danger area, a minute later Harrison on for the injured Halliday drove in a low cross which Durham did well to clear.
.
On 35, Fisher played a defence splitting ball through for Richardson but the ball was collected by the alert Flynn, before Smith broke on the right his cross found Morien who headed down to Bowey who shot over the bar. On 41, Morien turned supplier on the left when he drove in a low cross which was just too strong for Richardson; however Richardson recovered the ball and crossed to Morien whose shot was saved by Flynn. Durham retaliated with Haley breaking through the Dunston defence only to shoot wide of the target. Dunston took the lead on 44 when Morien was played in behind the Durham defence and after taking control slotted a shot past the advancing Flynn and into the net. On 45 Shaw attempted to round Flynn but Flynn did well to block only for the ball to fall to Morien who immediately tackled and the ball was cleared. Just before the half time whistle Harrison played in a cross which was met by Bowey with a header that went wide.

Dunston came out firing again after the break with Moriem playing through to Richardson whose shot was parried by Flynn, Durham replied with Saunders breaking on the left wing and crossing for Allen, but Dunston cleared the ball up-field and Richardson forced a corner. On 50 Haley played in a shot just wide of the target and 2 minutes later a poor back pass by Harrison to Connell who was challenged by Saunders, Connell however was able to recover the situation and collected the ball. On 66, the referee turned down a strong Dunston appeal for a penalty and a minute later Shaw played a corner kick right across the Durham goal and to safety, before a minute later Morien picked up a loose defensive ball on the edge of the Durham box and made sure of the result as he stroked the ball past Flynn and into the net for 2- 0 to Dunston.
.

.
Durham still kept on trying as the pitch started to take its toll on players’ legs and on 73 Saunders broke through, with Pearson challenging as Connell advanced Saunders hurriedly poked his shot wide, on 85, Golledge tried a low shot but Connell collected. Guerin on as a substitute for Richardson beat his marker and crossed, the ball was cleared as far as Bowey whose 20 yard shot struck the cross bar and bounced clear. Dunston continued to push and Pearson played in a good cross which was cleared. Durham again broke on 87 and Gilbey’s cross was headed over by King at the back post before Morien played in a cross which Flynn did well to collect as Guerin attacked the ball.
.
Final Score: Dunston 2 Durham City 0
.
Dunston back playing on grass after nearly a month played well to subdue a battling Durham performance; Dunstons’ strength in midfield in the leg sapping ground, gave them the advantage to secure the points with the goal scoring Morien getting a brace to add to his high scoring season tally whilst Dunston still had to maintain a vigilant role on the spritely Sanders and the grafting Golledge. This was a good grafting performance by Dunston faring them well for the next fixture in the FA Vase against Ashford United
.
Dunston’s Man of the Match: Dan Smith – in a game that demanded strong characters in the middle of the park, Dan excelled alongside the other midfield player Steven Bowey, Matty Fisher and Gary Shaw which saw Dunston control the game. Two goals from Malky Morien who worked well with Steven Richardson ensured the victory while Luke Gilhespy kept control in defence in what was a good team performance on a sticky pitch against battling opponents.
